Toimintaterapia osana iäkkäiden kuntoutujien kotiutusvaihetta

Ikääntyneiden määrän kasvaminen lisää tarvetta kehittää sosiaali- ja terveyspalveluja vastaamaan tähän muuttuvaan tilanteeseen. Tässä yhteiskunnallisessa muutoksessa myös toimintaterapialla on mahdollisuudet kehittyä iäkkäille suunnattuihin kuntoutuspalveluihin, joissa toimintaterapiaa on vielä niukasti käytetty.
Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena on olla tukemassa Laukaan Vanhusten palveluiden iäkkäille suunnattujen kuntoutuspalveluiden kehittämistä. Tavoitteena oli selvittää toimintatera-peutin työtehtäviä iäkkäiden kuntoutujien kotiutusvaiheessa sekä iäkkäiden kuntoutujien kotiutusvaiheessa työskentelevien toimintaterapeuttien kokemuksia toimintaterapian hyödyttävyydestä iäkkäiden toiminnallisuuteen.
Tutkimusote on laadullinen. Tutkimus toteutettiin verkkokyselynä Webropol-kyselyohjelmiston avulla suomalaisille toimintaterapeuteille, jotka työskentelevät iäkkäiden kuntoutujien kotiutusvaiheessa. Heidät tavoitettiin Toimintaterapeuttiliiton ylläpitä-män TOInet – sähköpostilistan kautta. Kyselyyn vastasi 17 toimintaterapeuttia.
Toimintaterapeutin työtehtävät iäkkään kuntoutujan kotiutusvaiheessa sisälsi toimintaterapeutille tyypillisiä tehtäviä, jotka vaihtelivat organisaation tai työpaikan käytänteiden mukaisesti. Yksi keskeisin työtehtävä oli erilaisten arviointien tekeminen sairaala- ja kotiympäristössä. Ilmiön tarkastelussa näyttää myös siltä, että iäkkäät kuntoutujat hyötyisivät toimintaterapeutin ammattiosaamisesta kotiutusvaiheessa, koska toimintaterapialla on tarjota iäkkäiden kuntoutujien toiminnallisuutta tukevia menetelmiä tilanteisiin, joissa iäkkään toiminnallisuus on heikentynyt sairauden tai vamman vuoksi.; The increase in the number of elderly people increases the need to develop social and health services so that they would respond to this changing situation. The purpose of the thesis was to support the development of the rehabilitation services for the elderly in Laukaa. The aim was to examine occupational therapists’ work tasks with the elderly in the hospital discharge. Another aim was to examine occupational therapists’ experiences on the effectiveness of occupational therapy on occupational performance in elderly people.
The methods used in the thesis were qualitative. The study was implemented as an online survey by using the Webropol-software and addressing the survey to Finnish occupational therapists who worked with elderly people in the hospital discharge phase. They were reached through the TOInet-mailing list maintained by The Finnish Association of Occupational Therapists. The survey was answered by 17 occupational therapists.
The occupational therapists’ work tasks with elderly people’s rehabilitation in the hospital discharge included typical work tasks of the profession, and those tasks were different in every workplace and organization. One of the most important tasks was to make different assessments in the hospital and home environment.
The results of the study also seem to indicate that occupational therapy has a positive impact on the elderly people. This is because occupational therapy can provide occupational performance support methods for elderly people in the situations where their occupational performance is impaired due to sickness or injury.
